Why is Fresh Water Scarce?
- List the main reasons for water scarcity? The main reasons for water scarcity are low rain fall, land degradation, population growth and water pollution
- What is a drought? What type of hardships do you think that a drought could cause if you were living in a village in a poor country such as Ethiopia? A drought is when less then usual rainfall happens over several years. Water is hard to get for a more wellthy town in a drought and a poor town in a place which gets alot of rain still finds it hard to get water so a town which is poor and in a drought must find it really hard. The people in a poor town try to grow their own food but if they are in a drouhgt then they have nothing to grow the food with.
- How does land degradation affect the supply of fresh water? Land degradation makes the rain run off so no water infiltrates the ground into the ground water, so the wells would get less water and they would start getting salt water.
4.(a) What is El Nino? El Nino is a group of winds which change course every couple of years. El Nino winds travel across the Pacific ocean between Australia and South America.
(b) Why does El Nino often cause drought in Australia? El Nino reverses the winds carrying moisture to Australia, to carry it to South America. Dry hot winds come in through the Pacific to Australia.
5. Observe the map showing the global effects of El Nino in 1982-83.
(a) What effects does El Nino have on the availability of fresh water? In Australia they hardly have any water and in South America so much water comes down that it can cause flooding and that can pollute the water.
(b) Name the countries and describe the problems that arose from decreased rainfall caused by El Nino. Australia and Peru are the main countries which are affected by El Nino. The farmers in Australia don't have enough water to grow crops. Cities and towns are put on very tight water restrictions. In Melbourne households are given a target of only using 150 litres per day.

Kampung Water Cleaning Methods
Station 6
In this station our group looked at these tablets which could purify 20L of water over a period of 30min, 10L if the water is dirty. We also looked at these liquid purifiers which could purify 15L of water after shaking for 30sec and leaving for 30min, lots of thirties. The tablets cost Rp3,000, I don't really know the cost for the liquid drops.
Station 2
We then traveled to the little mosque where the people learn about water cleaning. There we learnt how poo can infect your food and 6 situations to wash your hands. They even made a song about washing which went to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands" which went something like this,
TAMA MUCHI CAMAN MU CAMPOSHO ( ) (!) ( ) (!)
if you're happy and you know it clap your hands ( ) (!) ( ) (!)
TAMA MUCHI CAMAN MU CAMPOSHO ( ) (!) ( ) (!)
if you're happy and you know it clap your hands ( ) (!) ( ) (!)
DANA PASA NAMA AIR, TAMA NAMA AKU AIR
if you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it
TAMA MUCHI CAMAN MU CAMPOSHO ( ) (!) ( ) (!).
if you're happy and you know it clap your hands ( ) (!) ( ) (!).
( ( ) (!) ) means a clap and remember that's not what they actually sang.
Station 4
Another way to clean really dirty water is to use PUR. PUR is a sandy substance which creates Floc. After stirring for 5min let it settle for 5min and then place the water in a filter for 20min. Which, what do you know?, adds up to 30min. They also had a big plastic water dispenser with a clay cup attached to the top. The clay acts as a filter for the water. I didn't get notes for how long it takes the water to go through the clay filter but according to the other ways, I would say it takes about 30 min.
I learnt a lot that day; about how to take care of your hygiene, different ways to filter water on a household scale and how the number 30 can influence your life. :) Overall the field trip was fun :) .

the water treatment plant
The first stage is to filter out the big pieces of rubbish. They do this by putting in a big grid and then some smaller ones to get some other sizes of rubbish.
