Kampung Water Cleaning Methods

Our class and other classes went to the Kampung to look at how they clean water. So on the bus we went, and these are the stations I went to.

Station 6
In this station our group looked at these tablets which could purify 20L of water over a period of 30min, 10L if the water is dirty. We also looked at these liquid purifiers which could purify 15L of water after shaking for 30sec and leaving for 30min, lots of thirties. The tablets cost Rp3,000, I don't really know the cost for the liquid drops.

Station 2
We then traveled to the little mosque where the people learn about water cleaning. There we learnt how poo can infect your food and 6 situations to wash your hands. They even made a song about washing which went to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands" which went something like this,
TAMA MUCHI CAMAN MU CAMPOSHO ( ) (!) ( ) (!)
if you're happy and you know it clap your hands ( ) (!) ( ) (!)

TAMA MUCHI CAMAN MU CAMPOSHO ( ) (!) ( ) (!)
if you're happy and you know it clap your hands ( ) (!) ( ) (!)

DANA PASA NAMA AIR, TAMA NAMA AKU AIR
if you're happy and you know it, and you really want to show it

TAMA MUCHI CAMAN MU CAMPOSHO ( ) (!) ( ) (!).
if you're happy and you know it clap your hands ( ) (!) ( ) (!).

( ( ) (!) ) means a clap and remember that's not what they actually sang.

Station 4

Another way to clean really dirty water is to use PUR. PUR is a sandy substance which creates Floc. After stirring for 5min let it settle for 5min and then place the water in a filter for 20min. Which, what do you know?, adds up to 30min. They also had a big plastic water dispenser with a clay cup attached to the top. The clay acts as a filter for the water. I didn't get notes for how long it takes the water to go through the clay filter but according to the other ways, I would say it takes about 30 min.

I learnt a lot that day; about how to take care of your hygiene, different ways to filter water on a household scale and how the number 30 can influence your life. :) Overall the field trip was fun :) .
